Obaseki… Between The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea
By Ademola Gbadegesin
Please I need to be educated about Obaseki’s justifications for not allowing 14 members of House of Assembly to be inaugurated and exercise the mandate given them by their constituents ?
Is Obaseki an emperor ?
Is democracy in Edo State different from democracy practised elsewhere ?
Sincerely that’s my major area of disagreement with his style of leadership (dictatorship).
I’m not much Interested in the relationship between him and his godfather because in politics the more you look the less you see.
I really pity these elected members of House of Assembly that were frustrated by Obaseki simply because of intra-party disagreements, forgetting that the honourable members were equally elected by the people.
To me, denying the people of these 14 constituencies their respective representations in the Assembly is a politics of bitterness taken to the extreme.
I wouldn’t know why some of the Governors in this democratic dispensation are power drunk and often play the roles of alpha and omega in their respective States ?
Politics involves interplay of forces and powers with its undercurrents and substances.
In democracies, even a dummy knows there is a need to cross the hurdle of party nomination before facing the public’s decisions at polls. So why would an elected public office holder erroneously believe the party leadership is inconsequential ?
Diplomacy, statecraft, thoughtfulness, discretion, tact, poise are all part of the game every where in the world.
The person who wields power and the person who can prevent a person wielding power from exercising such power, both are equally powerful. Students of Political Science and International Relations would understand this theory of two faces of power better.
I pray Obaseki is not crying over already spilled milk and l hope he scale through the hurdle ; you may wish to call it sentiment. l don’t mind because he’s my person. Although l didn’t support his approach but Obaseki is among the few serving Governors with something upstairs.
