What Did Governor Oyebanji Ask Wheelchair-Bound Graduand at ABUAD?

In a deeply moving moment during the convocation ceremonies at Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, once again demonstrated his hallmark style of compassionate and empathetic leadership.

Spotting a physically challenged female graduand in a wheelchair, Governor Oyebanji walked over and personally engaged her in a conversation. In a gesture echoing the biblical account of King Solomon, the Governor asked her what she wanted most.

Ambition Over Material Gain

Despite her physical limitations and the financial challenges often faced by young graduates, the female graduand did not ask for money, material gifts, or temporary personal favours.

Instead, she expressed a deep hunger for knowledge, requesting financial support to enable her to complete her Doctorate (PhD) degree.

Her request highlights several key lessons:

  • Unwavering Intellectual Ambition: Proving that physical disability is never a barrier to academic excellence and high achievement.
  • Faith in Education: Recognizing that a higher degree provides long-term empowerment, self-reliance, and dignity far beyond immediate cash gifts.
  • Inspiration for Society: Serving as a powerful example for persons living with disabilities across the country.

A Model of Humanitarian Governance

Reflecting on the encounter, community leaders noted that true leadership extends beyond policy and infrastructure—it lies in listening to the genuine aspirations of the people.

“Compassionate leadership is not just about handing out money or material items; it is about listening to people, recognizing their hidden potential, encouraging their dreams, and providing the platform for them to succeed,” stated Kehinde Alatise.

The encounter reinforces Governor Oyebanji’s reputation as a leader who prioritizes human capital development and inclusive governance across Ekiti State.
