In a national broadcast marking Nigeria ’s 66th Independence Anniversary themed “From Reforms to Prosperity,” President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared that the country has navigated its toughest economic hurdles and is now transitioning from reform to widespread prosperity.

Reflecting on the painful economic decisions taken since 2023, President Tinubu likened Nigeria’s past situation to a cancer patient needing urgent surgery rather than temporary pain relief.

“Nigeria was like a sick patient who receives the terrible news that he has cancer. For too long, Nigeria’s leaders chose morphine while praying for a miracle that never came. We chose to excise the cancer. The emergency treatment is over; the foundation has been repaired.”

Key Economic Turnaround Indicators

President Tinubu emphasized that three and a half years into his administration, structural reforms have placed the Nigerian economy on a firm, self-sustaining growth trajectory:

  • Economic Growth: GDP expansion has exceeded 4% this year, driven by steady growth across both oil and non-oil sectors.
  • Record Exports: In 2025, non-oil export revenue surpassed $6 billion—the highest recorded figure in Nigerian history.
  • Fiscal Stability: Foreign reserves have been rebuilt, inflation has dropped significantly from its peak, foreign direct investment is rising, and oil theft has drastically reduced.

Lowering the Cost of Living and Driving Industrialization

The President stated that the central objective of the government is now focused on bringing down the cost of living by targeting the root causes of inflation.

Key Priority Initiatives Include:

  • Infrastructure & Connectivity: Completing crucial roads, railways, and ports connecting rural agricultural hubs directly to urban industrial markets.
  • Industrialization & Energy: Utilizing domestic natural gas resources to power manufacturing hubs and revitalize domestic industries.

“I want to see more Nigerians making things. I want to see more Nigerian farms feeding our cities and supplying our factories. I want young Nigerians building unicorns and creating opportunities here at home.”

Social Safety Nets and Youth Empowerment

Acknowledging the immediate hardship faced by vulnerable families, President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening social intervention programs:

  • Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND): Ensuring children from low-income backgrounds retain access to tertiary education.
  • Consumer Credit (CREDICORP): Enabling working Nigerians to acquire essential household assets like vehicles, solar systems, and digital devices without requiring upfront cash savings.
  • Targeted Cash Transfers: Refining the National Social Register to guarantee direct support reaches the poorest households.

A Call to Move Forward

Concluding his address, President Tinubu urged Nigerians to reject calls from regressive voices to return to wasteful subsidy regimes, asserting that the country must stay the course toward sustainable growth.

“Nigeria has corrected its course. We have passed through our own Red Sea. This is not the time to look back. Let us go forward together, with faith in ourselves and faith in our country. Our destination is in sight.”
