Bodija Explosion: Lives lost, Dozens Injured, Oyo Govt Reacts

In a tragic incident that occurred on the evening of January 16, 2024, an explosion rocked the Bodija area of Ibadan, resulting in loss of life, injuries, and significant damage to properties. Governor Seyi Makinde promptly responded to the incident, releasing a statement detailing the government’s immediate actions and plans for the affected residents.

Governor Makinde, along with his team, visited the scene of the explosion to assess the situation firsthand. The incident, which took place at approximately 7:44 pm, caused devastation in the vicinity, leading to casualties and numerous injuries. In response, the government swiftly deployed first responders and various agencies within Oyo State to initiate comprehensive search and rescue operations. These operations have been ongoing since the incident occurred and will continue throughout the night.

To ensure an effective response, the government dispatched earth-moving equipment, ambulances, emergency lights, and additional security personnel to the scene. The wounded and injured victims are receiving treatment and have been transferred to both public and private hospitals within Ibadan. Medical staff are on standby, ready to provide the necessary assistance to those affected. Governor Makinde and his team also visited the University College Hospital (UCH) to personally meet with some of the injured victims.

As of now, the total number of injured victims stands at 77, with the majority having already received medical treatment and been discharged. Tragically, the incident has claimed the lives of two individuals. The governor expressed his condolences, praying for the repose of their souls and offering support to their bereaved families during this difficult time.

Governor Makinde has instructed that the government will cover the medical expenses of all the victims. Furthermore, temporary accommodation will be provided to those whose houses were affected by the explosion. The government is committed to supporting the affected individuals in rebuilding their lives.

Preliminary investigations conducted by security agencies have revealed that the explosion was caused by explosive devices stored by illegal miners occupying one of the houses in Bodija. The investigation is ongoing, and any individuals found responsible for this tragedy will be held accountable.

Governor Makinde urged all residents to contact the emergency hotline at 615 for any further emergencies they may encounter. He also emphasized the importance of remaining calm and staying away from the immediate vicinity of the incident to facilitate the uninterrupted rescue operations.

The governor expressed his gratitude to the first responders, security personnel, and all those involved in the rescue operations. He also commended the efforts of medical personnel who have been tirelessly attending to the injured victims.

As the rescue operations continue, Governor Seyi Makinde called upon the community to keep the affected individuals in their thoughts and prayers. The government remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of the residents of Oyo State.
